Liver
Transplant and Recent Memory Loss
Dear Dr. Jill,
5 years ago I had a liver transplant. From 6
mo. prior and after the surgery, I have had tremendous problems with recent
memory. I also have many other problems associated with the procedure, including
major depression, that have yet to be resolved satisfactorily, and my transplant
team is convinced that nothing further can be done. I do not concur with their
assessment of the situation and am doing many things to reduce the impact of all
the problems created by the surgery. I can not work with these problems, even
though I have returned to my original profession and was terminated because of
these problems. I am still disabled, but I can not not tolerate being unemployed
and will continue to look for answers to these problems. Memory appears to be
the most difficult challenge at this time. I see a psychiatrist regularly to
work with the depression. but the miracle of a clear mind and memory still
escapes me.
Any suggestions???
Sincerely,
G.

Dear G.,
Your email address did not come through the
system so I am answering you here and will answer others here in the future as
well as through regular e-mail. If you desire simply send other emails to: drjill@thememorydoc.com
and I will respond to any private concerns there.
Your concerns are very similar to the ones I
hear from other people. So, I agree with you that your memory and clarity can be
restored with time--if you find some solutions you can live with and abide by
regularly.
Let me start by saying that since your problems
began with the liver, you are a person who must reduce and prevent toxicity at
all costs to promote the needs of your memory.
So let me begin by saying--
1- Drink distilled water and drink lots of
it--12 glasses per day would not be too much. You need to flush out your system
regularly. Also several glasses of green tea each day will help with this
flushing process.
2- I would be very conscientious to take a
"Probiotic" like "Primal Defense," a Garden of Life product,
developed by a man who could not handle toxicity and needed to protect his
digestive system.
3- I would begin a wheat grass regimen. You can
go to the Whole Food Markets near you and taste wheat grass drinks prepared for
you at their Wheat Grass Juice bar and from there you can look into buying
organic wheat grass and juicing it in a juicer or buy the wheat grass powders
like we do here.
Green Kamut wheat grass powder is sold in many places, is reasonably priced, and
is also sold here. I recommend that you start slowly and take only 1
tablespoon per day during the 1st week. Thereafter, take 2-3 tablespoons a day.
You may feel a tad bit weak or ill at first, but that is because the wheat grass
removes toxin. Wheat grass is not from the regular wheat family, just so you
know.
4- I would only eat organic meats, fish, and
eggs purchased from a whole food or natural health food market. I would increase
my vegetable, fruit, and whole grain fibrous intake as opposed to insulin
producing carbohydrates like white sugar, white rice, white bread, white
potatoes, and white pastas. All of these simply produce insulin and will not
assist you in balancing a healthy blood sugar level which will cause your body
to work better and stress your liver less. Try to get organic fruits and
vegetables as well. Your system needs as few additives and by-products as
possible. So stay away from boxed and canned foods and buy the real thing. Real
food untainted by processing of any kind as often as possible.
5- I would take additional vitamins: A high
quality multi-vitamin, a full 100% B complex, an Omega-3 (DHA) (1000 mg per
day), and a Calcium, Magnesium, & Zinc supplement. I would want to be sure
the vitamins were easily absorbed in your case, so I would look at additional
liquid nutrients like the Biometics products I sell here. Or you can go to a
Health Food Store and look for liquid vitamins that offer the Vitamins and
nutrients I am suggesting.
6- I would begin an exercise program that
suited me and be faithful to it (if only in short spurts until I was strong) 5
days a week.
7- Then if you are doing all of the above 6
suggestions I would add the NOW's Phosphatidyl serine (PS) (100 mg 3 per day) and
COUNTRY LIFE's Phosphatidyl choline (PC) up to 1200 mg per day. These are carried on
the Product's page. Also MEMX is
there, which has PS/ PC, Bacopa
Monniera and an Alpha Lipoic Acid mix. These are also all great memory enhancers.
However,
if you wish you can go to a Health Food Store today and purchase the products, I
would buy NOW--PS & COUNTRY LIFE--PC.
8- I would start there. If I continued to have
difficulty, I might add Vinpocetine and Huperzine found in my Focus Formula
package. You can also find this at the Product's
page.
9- Thereafter, if memory difficulties do not
improve, I would look into the Neurofeedback at a Psychotherapist's office
and possibly Chelation from a medical doctor.
10- I would engage in a class or new mental
venture of some kind. If I could not find a way to do that, I would begin reading, writing,
journaling and playing board games. Even speaking or dancing classes would be
helpful.
Thank you for writing. Please write back and
let us know of your outcome!
Dr. Jill
